      Carpentry

      Carpenters construct, erect and install structures made of timber. They also renovate and repair structures through extensions and new home builds. Carpenters are generally an onsite worker of the construction industry. If you like the outdoors and physical work then this could be the trade for you. As a carpenter, you will also be exposed to working at heights.

      Some of the other tasks you would undertake as a carpenter, include:

      • constructing housing frames from scratch
      • installing and erecting housing frames
      • levelling and straightening housing frames
      • installing fittings and fixtures
      • installing and cutting of fascia and wall cladding
      • installation of roof trusses
      • installing doors, windows and the internal fit outs of housing including window and door frames

      Shopfitting

      Shopfitters, as the name suggests, design, construct, erect and install structures for retail shop fit outs. There are two components of being a shopfitter, one being the manufacture of components in a factory and the second being the installation of the design onsite. Much of the work in this industry is completed through CNC, CAD and CAM technology and they can sometimes be referred to as the fine artists of the industry. Shopfitting is also very closely related to cabinet making and kitchen manufacturing.

      Some of the other tasks you would undertake as a shopfitter (cabinet-maker), include:

      • designing shop fit outs
      • designing and manufacturing kitchens
      • designing and manufacturing fit outs for boats and caravans, and items of fine detail
      • designing and manufacturing furniture
      • designing through the use of computer aided technology
      • working with materials such as timber, veneers and particleboard
